The Stinger is a shoulder mounted rig. It uses the same Mini Baseplate and Horizontal Zwiss Plate as in the Blackmagic Tripod Rig, but it adds the Zacuto Shoulder Pad with 7” rods and our Zgrips V3 short handles. This rig is an in-line shoulder mounted rig so we suggest using either an EVF (Electronic Viewfinder) or slightly turning your head and using the BMC touch screen. We don’t recommend using an offset rig because it is unwieldy to control and wants to tilt and dip. The Horizontal Zwiss Plate can be positioned vertically for shoulder mounted work or mounted horizontally for tripod work. This kit also includes the Blackmagic Top Handle for easily picking up the rig and positioning on your shoulder or tripod. The rods are standard 15mm lightweight spacing so they can accept any 15mm lightweight follow focus and matte box.
The Blackmagic Stinger kit is a blank canvas inline shoulder mounted kit. Perfect for long shoots and holding many accessories. The Stinger is designed to be used with an offset electronic viewfinder or monitor or by simply looking slightly sideways at the camera screen. It starts with our Mini Baseplate which has up and down and side to side movement to center your lens with a follow focus or matte box.
It includes our Zgrips V3 Short with 4.5in rods keeping your arms tucked in close for comfort and stability. The Zgrips have articulation at the handgrips and can also pivot and swing back and forth where the handles meet at the center. They can quick release away to put the rig on a tripod or for storage. Extending behind the baseplate is our comfy shoulder pad and a Horizontal Zwiss Plate ‘cheeseplate.’ The Horizontal Zwiss Plate has four quick release rod ports, one on each corner, to hold articulating arms or rods. It can also accept a V-mount or 3-stud/gold mount battery plate and up to two wireless plates. It can be set vertically for balance when being used shoulder mounted and then quick releases off the rods and slide on horizontally for tripod use so the view of the Blackmagic camera screen is not blocked.
The kit is capped off with our Blackmagic Top Handle. Perfect for taking the kit on or off your shoulder or for low mode shooting. The handle attaches to the camera with a 5in Z-rail and 3 included ¼ 20” screws. The Blackmagic Top Handle can quick release on and off the Z-rail. It can face back or front and slides up and down the Z-rail for balance. The rod running through the handle is threaded for extensions and can accept a Z-release mount like the T-mount or Tri-mount to hold accessories.
We recommend using a Zacuto EVF with the Blackmagic HD-SDI to HDMI mini converter. This is still the most cost effective solution on the market with the greatest amount of flexibility. It has been tested and adds no additional lag to the EVF's picture. Using the converter with the Zacuto EVF gives you an extra HDMI loop through to feed another HDMI monitor. The Blackmagic HD-SDI to HDMI mini converter takes the HD-SDI in from the camera giving you an additional HD-SDI feed to another HD-SDI device, like an outboard recorder or monitor. When adding the cost of the Z-Finder EVF pro and the Blackmagic HD-SDI to HDMI mini converter, it becomes one of the least expensive HD-SDI EVF's on the market.
