Der GY-HM790E ist mit drei 1/3"-CCDs ausgestattet, die eine leichtere und kompaktere Bauweise erlauben, was zu besserer Beweglichkeit vor Ort und höherer Flexibilität mit Kamerafernsteuersystemen im Studio führt. Der Camcorder produziert 1920 x 1080 Bilder und kann in 1080i, 720p und für Produktionen, die noch nicht in HD arbeiten, sogar in SD (480i) aufzeichnen. Die Aufzeichnungsrate beträgt wahlweise 35 Mbps (HQ-Modus / variable Bitrate) oder 19 Mbps / 25 Mbps (SP-Modus / konstante Bitrate).

Die Kamera wird mit einem 14-fach-Zoombjektiv von Canon ausgeliefert, dennoch können durch den 1/3"-Bajonett-Objektivanschluss eine Vielzahl anderer Optiken verwendet werden.
